Zanzibar marked a major milestone in maritime transport on January 20, 2026, with the official launch of the high-speed ferry Kilimanjaro 9 (Dragon of the Sea) by President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi at Mtoni Verde.

The vessel, owned by Azam Marine Ltd, is expected to boost passenger travel, cargo transport, and strengthen the islands’ blue economy.

Built in China, the ferry has a capacity of 631 passengers and incorporates an advanced wastewater treatment system, reflecting Azam Marine’s commitment to environmental protection in the marine sector, said CEO Aboubakar Azizi.

President Mwinyi described maritime transport as a backbone of Zanzibar’s economy, noting that over 90 percent of cargo and goods are moved by sea

“Efficient and modern maritime transport is critical for our economic growth,” he said, while reaffirming the government’s pledge to improve port infrastructure, including Fumba and Mangapwani ports, as well as other facilities across Unguja and Pemba.

The launch highlights the role of the private sector in driving economic transformation. Azam Marine has invested $150 million USD in modern ships and related infrastructure, creating 281 jobs for Tanzanians

In parallel, the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA) reports $6.8 billion USD in registered investment projects, generating 28,000 direct jobs, signaling growing confidence in Zanzibar’s investment climate.

President Mwinyi commended Mzee Said Salim Bakhresa, founder of the Bakhresa Group, for his visionary investment in the maritime sector and urged other local and international investors to follow suit.

He assured that the government will continue to provide a favorable tax and investment environment, supporting initiatives that drive growth and employment.

The inauguration of Kilimanjaro 9 is expected to enhance connectivity between the islands, improve passenger comfort, and facilitate safer, faster transport of goods strengthening Zanzibar’s position as a hub for maritime trade in the region.

The statement was issued by Raqey Mohamed, Deputy Director of Communications at State House (Ikulu).
