President Samia urges tree planting to fight climate change

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has called on Tanzanians to plant trees, saying this is a key way to fight the real and growing impacts of climate change.

Speaking to residents in Bungi Kilimo, South Unguja, today, the President said climate change is not a theory but a reality affecting millions of people worldwide.

She noted the visible effects, including drought, unpredictable rainfall, floods, rising temperatures, and rising sea levels.

“Climate change is not a story. It is a reality we see and live with. Every country in the world is facing these challenges,” President Samia said.

She stressed that planting trees and caring for them is a simple yet powerful solution. Trees help bring rainfall, protect water sources, prevent soil erosion, support food production, and improve the wellbeing of both current and future generations.

President Samia also said protecting the environment is a key pillar in implementing Tanzania’s 2050 National Development Vision, particularly in areas of environmental conservation and climate resilience.

She added that with Tanzania’s population expected to reach 70 million in the coming years, if 30 million people plant one tree each year and nurture it, the country will see a major increase in forest cover and sustainable environmental resources.
