NEMC backs President Samia’s environmental protection drive

The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has reaffirmed its support for President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s environmental conservation agenda by taking part in a nationwide tree-planting exercise to mark her birthday on January 27.

As part of the commemoration, President Samia planted a tree as a symbolic call to action for environmental protection, in line with the national slogan, “Patriotism Means Protecting the Environment — Take Part in Tree Planting.”

The gesture aimed to strengthen public awareness and encourage citizens to take responsibility for safeguarding natural resources.

Through its 13 regional zones across the country, NEMC mobilized ministries, public and private institutions, civil society organizations, and environmental committees to participate in tree planting in schools, health centers, markets, and other public spaces.

Speaking at the event on behalf of the Director General, NEMC Director for Administration and Finance Dickson Mjinja emphasized the critical role of tree planting in combating climate change.

He noted that trees help preserve ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and improve human well-being.

“Tree planting is one of the most effective and practical ways to mitigate the impacts of climate change while protecting ecological balance,” Mr. Mjinja said.

Meanwhile, Ilala Zone NEMC Manager Abella Muyungi urged citizens to take an active role in environmental protection, stressing that conservation is a shared national responsibility.

“Protecting the environment is not only a government duty — it is everyone’s responsibility. Citizens must take practical action to preserve our environment,” she said.

NEMC reiterated its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to support the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan in promoting sustainable environmental management and long-term national development.

The tree-planting event in Ilala Ward, held at the Msikate Tamaa Grounds, was coordinated by NEMC in collaboration with Environmental Ambassador Grit Godfrey from the Vice President’s Office.
