President Samia moves to bring electricity to all hamlets by 2030

President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has directed the Rural Energy Agency (REA) to connect all remaining hamlets in the country without electricity by 2030, a move set to transform rural livelihoods.

The directive was highlighted today by Mr. Frank Mugogo on behalf of REA Director General, Mr. Hassan Saidy, during a ceremony in Njombe Region introducing Central Electricals International Ltd, the contractor tasked with implementing the HEP 2B project across 218 hamlets.

“Njombe has 1,833 hamlets in total, of which 1,276 are already electrified. This project will provide electricity to 218 more, leaving only 339 hamlets to be connected in subsequent phases,” said Mr. Mugogo.

He noted that households can now access electricity connections for as low as TZS 27,000, an initiative made possible under the Sixth Phase Government led by President Samia.

Acting Regional Administrative Secretary, Mr. Lewisi Mnyambwa, praised the President for allocating more than TZS 24 billion to expand electricity access in Njombe. He stressed that REA will closely monitor project implementation to ensure timely completion.

“We urge communities near project sites to support the contractor and prioritize local employment. This will not only facilitate the project but also boost the local economy and ensure residents directly benefit from development initiatives,” Mr. Mnyambwa added.

Mr. Zameer Meghji, Project Director at Central Electricals International Ltd, expressed gratitude to the government for the opportunity.

He assured that the project will be completed on schedule, with active collaboration with local communities and a focus on creating jobs for residents.

The project is part of President Samia’s broader vision to ensure that electricity reaches every corner of Tanzania, enhancing socio-economic development, improving access to services, and creating opportunities for growth in rural communities.
