Specialist doctors from Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital have launched a five-day medical outreach camp in Manyara Region, expanding access to advanced healthcare services for patients with bone injuries, accident-related trauma, and other complex conditions.
The outreach, which runs from January 26 to January 30, reflects a broader government effort to decentralize specialist healthcare and reduce the burden on major referral hospitals, while improving service delivery in underserved regions.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Baraka Mponda said the camp aims to close gaps in access to specialist treatment, particularly for patients who would otherwise need to travel long distances for advanced care.
“This initiative is part of a coordinated strategy by the government and health partners to ensure specialist medical services reach citizens wherever they live,” Dr. Mponda said.
He explained that the outreach is being implemented in collaboration with Manyara Regional Referral Hospital and includes specialist clinics, surgical procedures, and expert consultations for patients with orthopedic injuries and accident-related conditions.
Beyond orthopedic care, the outreach is also providing specialized services in ophthalmology, as well as ear, nose, and throat (ENT) treatment.
According to Dr. Mponda, the initiative is designed not only to treat patients but also to strengthen the capacity of local healthcare workers through knowledge exchange and hands-on collaboration.
“We want to ensure patients receive high-quality specialist care without unnecessary travel or delays. At the same time, we are building the skills and confidence of regional health providers,” he said.
Health sector analysts note that such outreach programs play a critical role in improving equity in healthcare delivery, particularly in regions where specialist services remain limited. By fostering cooperation between zonal and regional referral hospitals, the initiative supports a more integrated and efficient healthcare system.
Dr. Mponda emphasized that the partnership model being applied in Manyara could serve as a blueprint for expanding specialist healthcare across other regions.
“This collaboration strengthens service delivery and makes specialized treatment more accessible to residents of Manyara and neighboring areas,” he said.
