Government refutes plans to import chicken chicks

By The Respondents Reporter

The Tanzanian government has officially denied claims circulating on social media suggesting it intends to import chicken chicks from abroad.

The statement comes from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, reassuring citizens and poultry farmers of the country’s commitment to supporting local poultry production.

Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, clarified the matter on December 24, 2025, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Mwanza City.

“There are reports being spread that are causing unnecessary alarm among the public. I want to make it clear that there is no plan to import chicks or any poultry from other countries. Such an action would violate the law, and we operate strictly within legal frameworks. Citizens should disregard these rumors and rely on official information from my office, the authorized voice for the livestock and fisheries sector,” said Dr. Kakurwa.

He urged poultry farmers to remain patient as the government implements its carefully designed strategy aimed at protecting local markets and investments.

The initiative, according to the minister, will ensure the growth and stability of Tanzania’s poultry industry while safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods.

This assurance comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen domestic agricultural sectors and promote self-reliance in food production.
