The Commissioner for Customs and Excise, Mr. Juma Hassan, has underlined that safeguarding the community is one of the Customs Department’s key responsibilities, alongside protecting the nation’s borders.
Speaking during a ceremony at the Ocean Road Cancer Institute in Dar es Salaam, part of this year’s International Customs Day celebrations, Commissioner Hassan emphasized the department’s dual role in both economic and social protection.
“The primary purpose of border protection is to ensure that society is shielded from harmful practices, including the importation of unsafe goods and tax evasion.
International Customs Day is a special occasion to remind everyone that protecting the community is a central duty of Customs,” he said.
He added that ensuring proper tax collection is essential for supporting social services, including healthcare, benefiting citizens across the country.
As part of this year’s celebrations, the Customs Department donated hospital equipment, milk, fruits, and patient towels to the institute, reinforcing its commitment to giving back to the community.
