Government moves to transform pond fish farming for economic growth

By The Respondents Reporter

The government is set to revolutionize pond-based fish farming in Tanzania, aiming to boost production, strengthen the fisheries value chain, and ensure that public funds deliver tangible benefits to communities.

Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ng’wasi Kamani, said the initiative is part of a broader effort by the Ministry to implement President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s directive that all government investments must yield positive results for beneficiaries.

Speaking during a visit to pond fish farmers in Kisoko, Mwanza Region, on December 30, 2025, Kamani emphasized the importance of maximizing the impact of public resources.

“President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s instructions are clear: wherever we invest funds, they must generate meaningful benefits for the community,” he said.

As part of the reforms, the Ministry has begun working closely with the private sector to expand the production of fish fingerlings, fish feed, and the adoption of modern technologies.

These measures are designed to lower operational costs for pond fish farmers and help them achieve greater economic sustainability.

Kamani also highlighted plans to enhance access to affordable loans for fish farming beneficiaries. The Ministry has initiated discussions with financial institutions to create a wider and more competitive lending framework that will enable fishermen to obtain credit on favorable terms.

“As a Ministry, we are evaluating ways to bring financial institutions closer to our fishermen, providing wider and competitive loan opportunities to help them expand their operations and improve livelihoods,” he explained.

The move reflects the government’s commitment to transforming the fisheries sector into a key driver of economic empowerment, especially for rural communities engaged in small-scale fish farming.

By supporting production, technology adoption, and financial access, the initiative is expected to increase fish output, generate income, and create jobs along the fisheries value chain.

The pond fish farming reforms are part of Tanzania’s broader strategy to strengthen food security, improve nutrition, and stimulate economic growth in regions with high potential for aquaculture.
