Tanzanians demand transparency as election inquiry commission begins work

By The Respondents Reporter

Retired Chief Justice Mohammed Chande Othman, who chairs the Commission of Inquiry into the unrest that occurred during and after the October 29, 2025 General Election, has reaffirmed that Tanzanians are demanding clarity, accountability, and a thorough investigation.

He assured the public that their expectations will guide every step the Commission takes.

Addressing journalists on Monday, December 1, 2025, Justice Othman said citizens want the truth established openly and responsibly as the country reflects on the incidents that challenged national peace.

He emphasized that while the Commission is committed to transparency, it must also balance this with the need to protect individual rights.

“Some of our sessions will be open to the public, while others will be held privately in special settings to safeguard personal rights. Tanzania now has clear laws that protect people’s privacy,” Justice Othman explained.

He added that the feedback and expectations received from the public will shape how the Commission executes its mandate in responding to the terms of reference entrusted to it.

Justice Othman noted that the central mission of the inquiry is to uncover facts, ensure justice, and help rebuild public trust, all while reinforcing the values of peace and national unity.

The Commission is expected to collect testimonies, examine evidence, and issue recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future and strengthening Tanzania’s democratic processes.
