Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi has praised the Government of India for its significant contribution to the Isles’ economic and social progress, reaffirming Zanzibar’s commitment to strengthening its long-standing partnership with New Delhi.

Dr. Mwinyi delivered the remarks at State House in Zanzibar on December 1, 2025, during a meeting with India’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Bishwadip Dey, who had arrived to present special congratulatory messages following the President’s victory in the October 29 General Election.

The President said India’s development support continues to make a meaningful impact in key sectors, noting that assistance in infrastructure, the urban water project, youth training, health services, and ICT innovation has helped accelerate Zanzibar’s growth.

He underscored the value of India’s role in expanding opportunities for young Zanzibaris, particularly through capacity-building and professional training programs.

“These initiatives are shaping a more skilled generation and strengthening our future workforce,” President Mwinyi noted.

Dr. Mwinyi also encouraged greater Indian participation in Zanzibar’s investment landscape, pointing to substantial opportunities in tourism and the blue economy, which remain central pillars of the Isles’ economy. He welcomed Indian companies to explore these sectors, describing them as ripe for sustainable partnerships.

The President further highlighted the importance of ICT development, applauding the contribution of the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus, which he said is helping the country advance toward a more digital and efficient public service system.

He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the institute’s continued expansion.

High Commissioner Dey assured that India will maintain and strengthen its cooperation with Zanzibar, emphasizing the strategic value of the relationship for both countries.

He commended President Mwinyi for his transformative leadership and pledged increased development assistance, more training opportunities in India, and an expanded budget for Zanzibar-focused projects.

The meeting reaffirmed the growing diplomatic and economic ties between Zanzibar and India a partnership both sides say will continue to generate shared benefits for years to come.
