Social media giant Meta has suspended the accounts of activists Mange Kimambi and Maria Sarungu Tsehai, following multiple allegations of misconduct, incitement, and actions deemed a threat to national ethics, peace, and unity.

The suspension affects their accounts on Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Mange and Maria have been accused of instigating serious disturbances in Tanzania, particularly surrounding the general elections held on October 29, 2025.

The incidents reportedly involved extensive public and private property damage, theft, arson, and several fatalities linked to the unlawful seizure of police stations and misuse of firearms by criminal groups.

Meta confirmed the action, stating: “These accounts have been removed for violating our policies. We do not allow users to create new accounts that replicate those previously removed for serious policy violations.”

Reports indicate that Mange and Maria allegedly received significant funds from organizations and individuals to incite unrest, spreading hate and coordinating violent activities across Tanzania.

Their activities on social media have drawn widespread criticism, with many citizens welcoming Meta’s decision as a step toward safeguarding peace and human rights in the country.

These cases are cited as examples of how social media can be misused for personal gain, inciting violence and public disorder without regard for the rights of others.

This is not the first time Meta has suspended accounts for such violations. In January 2021, Meta permanently removed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s X (formerly Twitter) account due to the risk of inciting violence following his call for supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol, resulting in property destruction and multiple deaths.

In 2022, X also suspended accounts of the prominent newspaper Caravan, actor Sushant Singh, and activist Hansraj Meena for violating platform rules during demonstrations demanding agricultural reforms.

Meta’s recent action against Mange and Maria has been widely praised by Tanzanians, who view it as a decisive move to promote national security, peace, and accountability on social media platforms.
