Tanzania, Uganda lock horns in crucial AFCON clash today

By Flora Mkoloma

Tanzania faces regional rivals Uganda today in a decisive Group match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals currently underway in Morocco, with both sides desperate for victory after losing their opening fixtures.

The East African derby carries huge significance, as defeat would leave the losing side with an uphill task to reach the knockout stage, while victory would revive qualification hopes in the tightly contested group.

The match will be played at Al Madina Stadium in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.

Taifa Stars head coach Miguel Gamondi said yesterday that he expects a tough contest but insisted that discipline, intensity and execution on the pitch will determine the outcome rather than reputation.

“Tanzania and Uganda are evenly matched. When you look at players based locally and those playing abroad, the quality is almost the same. This match will be decided by performance, not names,” Gamondi said.

The coach expressed confidence in his squad, pointing to the experience of captain Mbwana Samatta and winger Simon Msuva as key assets in handling the pressure of the high-stakes encounter.

Msuva said the players understand the importance of the match and are fully focused on securing maximum points.

“We know what is at stake. Our aim is to win this match, build confidence and put ourselves in a strong position to fight for qualification,” he said.

Uganda head coach Paul Put also acknowledged the intensity of the fixture, describing it as a classic derby where form often counts for little.

“Derbies are never easy. Both teams are under pressure after the first results, so this will be a very competitive match,” Put said.

He challenged his players to show character, commitment and tactical discipline in a contest he believes could define their AFCON campaign.

Uganda midfielder Allan Okello said the team has corrected mistakes from their opening match and is determined to respond positively.

“This is a very important game. We didn’t start the tournament the way we wanted, but we are ready to fight and get a result,” Okello said.

The Tanzania–Uganda clash is expected to attract strong interest across East Africa, with fans anticipating an intense battle as the two neighbours seek to keep their AFCON dreams alive.
