Tanzania’s transport sector continues to be a key driver of the nation’s economic growth, with stakeholders urged to work together to address challenges and maximize opportunities, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Prof Godius Kahyarara, has emphasized.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam during a high-level meeting with key sector players, Prof Kahyarara said the forum brought together institutions such as the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Tanzania Police Force, PMO-RALG, Ministry of Transport, DP World, Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), and the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS).
The aim was to strengthen cooperation in developing the sector and driving the economy forward.
“Transport plays a critical role in the economy through air, road, maritime, and railway services. It is vital that all stakeholders collaborate closely to achieve specific national development goals,” he said.
Dar es Salaam Port Manager, Abed Galus, highlighted that the port has seen an increase in large vessel traffic, enabling the handling of cargoes up to 60,000 tonnes per call.
He noted that TPA is working with partners to upgrade port infrastructure and reduce congestion, particularly in truck traffic.
Deputy Permanent Secretary of PMO-RALG, Engineer Rogatus Mativila, stated that there is no need for a permanent weighbridge at Kwala Dry Port. Instead, trucks can continue using the Vigwaza weighbridge and mobile weighing systems at Kwala, which ensures efficiency and reduces unnecessary costs.
Meanwhile, Director General of TRC, Engineer Machibya Masanja, said the corporation is upgrading locomotives to improve cargo transport from Dar es Salaam Port to Kwala Dry Port and Ihumwa in Dodoma.
He also encouraged private sector investment in rail transport, noting that the law allows private ownership of freight and passenger trains.
“The transport sector is a backbone of our economy. Investment, collaboration, and infrastructure upgrades are key to ensuring it continues to drive growth and create opportunities for all Tanzanians,” he added.
This meeting underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring Tanzania’s transport sector remains efficient, modern, and capable of supporting sustainable economic growth.
