The Rural Energy Agency (REA) has launched a landmark project to provide clean cooking energy infrastructure to 52 secondary schools and one VETA college, benefiting more than 54,000 students and 2,000 teachers across 18 regions.
The initiative, valued at TZS 5.8 billion, is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure safe, modern, and sustainable energy use in public institutions.
The contract signing ceremony took place on December 4, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, led by REA Director General Eng. Hassan Saidy, alongside representatives from Taifa Gas Ltd and Hanny G Ltd.
The programme targets institutions serving over 100 people, following the government directive to phase out firewood and charcoal use in such facilities.
Eng. Saidy described the project as a continuation of the Clean Cooking Energy Strategy, launched by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan on May 8, 2024.
“This initiative will not only modernize cooking in schools and colleges but also protect the environment and improve health by reducing exposure to harmful smoke,” he said.
According to Eng. Advera Mwijage, REA’s Director of Renewable and Alternative Energy Technologies, the project covers installation of LPG systems ranging from 1 to 2 tonnes, large cooking pots of 50–300 litres, and alternative charcoal stoves.
The budget also includes provision of initial alternative charcoal supplies for all beneficiary institutions.
“The initiative has already started with installations in schools in Simiyu and Ruvuma, and work is ongoing at Ruhinda Secondary School in Kagera,” Eng. Mwijage added.
Taifa Gas Sales Manager Mosses Massawe expressed gratitude to President Samia for prioritizing clean energy in public institutions, emphasizing its importance for health and sustainability.
Hanny G Investment Director Hanny Mbaria also pledged to fully implement the contract, ensuring smooth adoption of safe and clean energy in all institutions involved.
The project is expected to significantly reduce the risks associated with traditional fuels, save costs, and promote modern, efficient, and sustainable cooking practices across Tanzanian schools and training centers.
It marks a major step forward in the country’s commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally friendly future.
