Tanzania stands firm amidst international pressure over election

By Prosper Makene

The Tanzanian government has issued a statement acknowledging and considering public statements made by development partners and friendly nations regarding the events that unfolded on election day, October 29, 2025.

The statement, released by the Government Communication Unit, expresses concern over the content of these statements, despite open discussions held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and members of the diplomatic corps on November 28, 2025.

Tanzania recognizes the international community's contribution to strengthening democracy and socio-political development, and emphasizes the establishment of an Investigation Commission to examine post-election violence incidents and provide a report.

The investigation and report will provide insight into the events and serve as a foundation for cooperation in building a better future.

Tanzania remains committed to international cooperation for peace and development, calling on stakeholders to allow national systems to implement government-set actions and decisions.

The Government of Tanzania assures the international community and development partners of its readiness and commitment to continue cooperating on matters of mutual interest as partners.

The statement is in response to statements issued by countries including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the European Union, Finland, France, Ghana, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation.

Tanzania appreciates the interest shown by these stakeholders and reaffirms its commitment to democracy, peace, and development.

The government is confident that the investigation will shed light on the events and pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future for all Tanzanians.

The government also urges all stakeholders to respect Tanzania's sovereignty and allow the national authorities to handle the matter in accordance with the country's laws and regulations.
