Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila has urged residents to continue safeguarding peace and unity as they usher in the New Year 2026, while also encouraging them to give thanks to God for the achievements and blessings recorded in 2025.

Speaking to journalists on December 31, 2025, at the Johari Rotana Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Mr Chalamila said the region remains calm and secure, attributing the stability to strong leadership by President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the cooperation of citizens.

He emphasized that peace is the cornerstone of national development and must be protected by all.

The regional commissioner cautioned residents against actions that could disrupt public order during the festive season, including the use of fireworks without police authorization and the burning of tyres.

He said such acts pose risks to public safety and undermine the spirit of unity that the country has worked hard to build.

Mr Chalamila highlighted key development projects being implemented across the region, particularly ongoing road and bridge construction aimed at improving mobility and resilience to flooding.

He pointed to the Jangwani road project as a critical intervention, noting that contractors have been instructed to work around the clock to ensure timely completion. He also referenced improvements being carried out under the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project (DMDP).

On water supply, he acknowledged challenges caused by climate change but noted that recent rains have increased water levels in the Ruvu River, easing pressure on supply systems.

He said the government is implementing long-term solutions, including construction of the Kidunda mega dam, alongside plans to channel water from the Rufiji River to Dar es Salaam to permanently address water shortages.

Addressing energy supply, Mr Chalamila said the government has continued to strengthen electricity infrastructure in the region to meet growing demand from households, businesses, and industries.

He further said the region is prepared to receive more than 95,323 students expected to join Form One in January 2026, in addition to new enrolments in pre-primary and primary schools.

He stressed that schools must adhere to government directives banning unnecessary fees and contributions.

Mr Chalamila also underscored the importance of the Universal Health Insurance programme as directed by President Samia, saying the initiative aims to ensure citizens access health services without financial hardship, including challenges related to hospital procedures when a patient passes away.

Commenting on incidents of unrest and destruction of infrastructure reported on October 29, he said the government is restoring affected social services and urged residents to work closely with authorities to maintain peace. He also called on religious leaders to continue promoting harmony and national unity.

“As we welcome the New Year 2026, let us remain peaceful, responsible, and committed to building a prosperous Dar es Salaam and a stronger Tanzania,” Mr Chalamila said.
