Msamvu Food Market launch brings safer cooking and better opportunities for women

Over 450 women food vendors in Morogoro region are set to benefit from the Mwanamke Shujaa initiative, a program by Coca-Cola Kwanza in partnership with Oryx Gas Tanzania, designed to improve women’s health, income, and working conditions.

In Morogoro Municipal Council, 150 women from the Msamvu area have already received support through the program, which provides modern, safe cooking solutions and training to boost their businesses.

Speaking at the launch, Coca-Cola Kwanza Community Communications Director Salumu Nasoro said the initiative protects women from the health and environmental risks caused by firewood and charcoal.

“This project focuses on clean cooking energy, particularly LPG, to reduce respiratory illnesses, protect the environment, and improve productivity for women entrepreneurs,” Nasoro said.

The launch of the Msamvu Food Market provides 50 modern, safe, and organized stalls, replacing the unsafe roadside spaces where women previously worked. These upgrades create a safer, more productive environment for business and for families who rely on these women’s earnings.

The initiative also offers business and entrepreneurship training, modern tools, and opportunities to increase income and employment, giving women a stronger financial foundation for their families.

Clean Energy Ambassador Jenepha Mosha highlighted the wider benefits of LPG, saying it supports household economies, protects forests, and safeguards women’s health, who are most exposed to smoke from traditional fuels.

“Clean energy is a direct solution to health and environmental challenges. When women cook safely, we reduce air pollution, preserve forests, and improve lives,” Mosha said.

Oryx Gas Tanzania supported the initiative with gas cylinders worth TZS 11 million, making clean cooking energy more accessible for participating women.

John Kulunge, Head of the Industry and Trade Department, said the Municipal Council is partnering with development stakeholders to reduce the reliance on dirty fuels.

“Clean energy is a national priority championed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan. It saves forests and reduces dependence on firewood and charcoal,” he said.

Morogoro Mayor Khalid Matengo encouraged women vendors to use the 10% municipal loan program to expand their businesses through community groups.

The Msamvu Food Market demonstrates how clean energy and entrepreneurship support can improve health, protect the environment, and strengthen livelihoods, showing that investments in women directly benefit families and communities.
