Heavy rains disrupt roads, power, and transport across Tanzania

By The Respondents Reporter

Heavy rainfall continues to affect large parts of Tanzania, causing disruptions to transport, electricity supply, and infrastructure, according to the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA).

TMA reported that from December 26 to 27, 2025, it issued alerts warning of periods of heavy rain expected to continue until December 29.

The regions most affected include Kigoma, Tabora, Katavi, Rukwa, Mbeya, Songwe, Iringa, Njombe, Dodoma, Singida, Ruvuma, Morogoro, Lindi, Mtwara, Arusha, Manyara, Kilimanjaro, Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Pwani including Mafia Island, and the islands of Unguja and Pemba.

From last night into this morning, heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds has caused flooding, road blockages, and power outages.

By 3:00 a.m., rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres within 24 hours was recorded in Same (94.5 mm), Morogoro (58.6 mm), and Tabora (55.4 mm), while Hombolo recorded 49.5 mm, Kibaha 43.6 mm, Dodoma 36.6 mm, and Iringa 35.6 mm.

The downpours have damaged sections of the old Central Railway Line (MGR), affecting bridges in Kilosa District (Morogoro Region) and Gulwe (Dodoma).

Power supply interruptions have been reported on TANESCO’s network and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), while the Morogoro–Iringa highway at Mama Marashi–Mikumi experienced rockfalls and mudslides, temporarily disrupting road traffic.

Transport services, particularly along the SGR, have been affected, while government teams are working to restore normal operations and ensure safety in affected areas.

TMA forecasts that the rain belt is likely to strengthen, with continued heavy rainfall expected on December 29, 2025, in parts of Arusha, Manyara, Kilimanjaro, Mara, Simiyu, Rukwa, Songwe, Mbeya, Iringa, Njombe, Morogoro, Ruvuma, Lindi, and Mtwara regions.

Authorities advise people in affected areas to avoid flooded roads, secure property, and follow updates from TMA and relevant local offices.

Residents should take necessary measures to minimize risks to life and property. TMA continues to monitor the situation and will provide timely updates.
