Tanzania’s Taifa Stars have etched their name into the nation’s football history after securing qualification to the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, following a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Tunisia in their final Group match played yesterday in Morocco.
The result was enough to see Tanzania advance as one of the best third-placed teams, marking a significant milestone for the national side against opponents widely regarded as one of Africa’s traditional football powers.
Head coach Miguel Gamondi openly admitted that Tunisia arrived at the tournament with greater experience, pedigree and technical depth, but said his players compensated through discipline, courage and unwavering commitment on the pitch.
Speaking after the match, Gamondi praised his squad for executing the tactical plan with maturity, particularly against a Tunisian side that needed a win to secure qualification.
“There is no doubt about the difference in history and technical level between the two teams, but my players showed character, discipline and belief. They followed instructions and fought until the final whistle. This is proof that Tanzania can compete with the best teams in Africa,” said Gamondi.
Taifa Stars captain Mbwana Samatta described the achievement as a moment of national pride, saying the players were fully aware of the responsibility they carried while representing Tanzania on the continental stage.
“This qualification means a lot to us as players and to all Tanzanians. We know the next match will be even tougher because we will be facing one of the strongest teams in Africa and the world, but we are ready to prepare and keep pushing to make more history,” Samatta said.
He also credited the technical bench led by Gamondi for instilling tactical discipline, mental strength and unity within the squad, factors he said had been crucial throughout the group stage.
Midfielder Feisal Salum, popularly known as ‘Fei Toto’, echoed the same sentiments, noting that the upcoming fixture would demand even greater effort, especially with opponents expected to enjoy strong support from their fans.
Nevertheless, he stressed that Taifa Stars are determined to intensify preparations and approach the match with confidence.
“We know the next game will be more difficult, but we will go back to training, prepare well and fight for a positive result,” said Feisal.
The team’s morale has also been boosted by a pledge of TZS 200 million promised as an incentive, with Tanzanians committing to reward each goal scored at the tournament with that amount, a gesture that has further strengthened the bond between the team and its supporters.
By reaching the Round of 16, Taifa Stars have not only surpassed expectations but also reinforced Tanzania’s growing presence on the African football scene, igniting fresh hope and belief among fans and proving that resilience and teamwork can bridge even the widest of gaps.
