Dar City head coach Mohamed Mbwana, who guided the team to defend their National Basketball League (NBL) title this season, has appealed to the Government and sports stakeholders to scale up investment in modern basketball facilities to advance the sport’s development in Tanzania.
Reflecting on his team’s successful campaign, Mbwana emphasized that improved indoor courts are crucial for grooming players who can compete effectively on the international stage.
He noted that while global competitions are played exclusively in indoor arenas, many local teams still depend on outdoor courts an imbalance he believes limits Tanzania’s readiness for international challenges.
“We represent the country at international levels, and all the games there are played indoors. Here at home, we still use outdoor courts, which puts us at a disadvantage. We urge the Government and stakeholders to help address this gap,” he said.
The coach commended BetPawa for introducing performance bonuses for players, saying the incentives have boosted morale, elevated the level of competition, and encouraged the emergence of fresh talent in the sport.
Mbwana further applauded the Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) for successfully managing the league despite a few setbacks.
He noted that the season’s high level of competition stemmed from strong preparations by teams across the country.
He added that Dar City’s experience from various local and international tournaments helped the squad remain resilient throughout the season and ultimately secure their championship title once again.
