More than TZS 1 billion will be distributed to stakeholders in Tanzania’s creative industry on January 23, 2026, the Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, has announced.
The funds, collected through the copyright levy, will benefit artists and practitioners in music, crafts, film, literary works and performing arts.
The payout forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the creative economy and ensure creators receive fair returns from the use of their intellectual property.
On the same day, additional royalty payments will be made from collections managed by collective management organisations, including the Tanzania Music Rights Society (TAMRISO) and the Society of Music Rights (SOMA).
The distribution will also include proceeds collected by South Africa’s CAPASSO, generated from the use of Tanzanian music on social media platforms.
More than TZS 300 million is expected to be shared from these collections, providing a further boost to incomes in the creative sector.
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to protecting copyright, enhancing transparency in royalty management and promoting sustainable growth of the arts and cultural industries.
