The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has called on the international media outlet CNN to exercise caution in its reporting following an article on recent events during the country’s elections.
The government emphasized the need for balanced reporting that does not incite division or spread misinformation.
The call was made today, November 23, 2025, in Dar es Salaam by Gerson Msigwa, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, who also serves as the government’s Chief Spokesperson, during a press briefing.
“It is surprising that CNN claimed difficulty in reaching the government’s side. We urge CNN to avoid publishing such one-sided reports. It is clear that the journalist relied on videos recorded on mobile phones without verifying facts on the ground in Tanzania,” Msigwa said.
He added, “While I do not condone the deaths that occurred, it is unprofessional and unacceptable for a journalist to continue causing distress to citizens by spreading harmful reports. A commission has been established to investigate, and once the report is ready, the government will take appropriate action.”
Msigwa further urged CNN to engage with the Tanzanian government, listen to the official side, and ensure their reporting reflects the truth rather than promoting one-sided narratives.
He also reassured Tanzanians that the country remains safe and that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has established a commission to investigate the events of October 29, with findings to be publicly released in due course.
