The Governments of Tanzania and Qatar have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the mutual recognition of seafarers’ certificates, marking a major step in strengthening cooperation in the maritime sector.
The signing ceremony took place in London on 24 November 2025, on the sidelines of the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly.
The event brought together government leaders and maritime industry stakeholders from around the world.
Tanzania was represented by the Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mr. Mohamed Malick Salum, while Qatar’s delegation was led by Engineer Abdulaziz Abdullah Al-Sulait, Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry of Transport.
The MoU aims to enhance professional standards, safety, and quality in the seafaring industry.
It also seeks to deepen diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
Under the agreement, Tanzanian seafarers will have greater access to job opportunities on vessels registered or operated by Qatari companies.
Their certificates will be recognised without the need for repeated validation, making it easier for them to work in international waters.
The deal is expected to open doors to more competitive labour markets, improve employment conditions, and enable Tanzanian seafarers to gain global skills and exposure to advanced maritime technologies.
It will also support the development of Tanzania’s maritime training institutions, as their certifications gain wider international acceptance.
The agreement marks an important milestone in expanding Tanzania’s presence in the global maritime sector and promoting employment opportunities for its seafaring workforce.
