Judith Kapinga (MP), Minister of Industry and Trade, visited the Fair Competition Commission (FCC) headquarters in Dar es Salaam today, commending the Commission’s work in promoting fair business practices and protecting consumers across Tanzania.
During the visit, Ms. Khadija Ngasongwa, Acting Director General of FCC, welcomed the Minister and highlighted the Commission’s achievements in regulating competition, curbing counterfeit goods, and creating a conducive environment for businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
“Our goal is to make Tanzania’s markets fair, safe, and efficient while protecting consumers,” Ms. Ngasongwa said.
“We work closely with the Ministry, government institutions, development partners, and the private sector to ensure regulations are implemented effectively and transparently.”
FCC oversees mergers, monitors market dominance, investigates anti-competitive practices, and ensures businesses comply with laws on counterfeit goods.
Recent reforms have strengthened the Commission’s powers, allowing it to make binding decisions on consumer protection matters, a task that previously fell to the courts.
To boost investment, FCC raised the approval threshold for business mergers from TZS 800 million to TZS 3.5 billion, enabling SMEs to expand operations more easily.
Ms. Ngasongwa noted that this move has improved access to finance, technology, and market opportunities for smaller businesses.
The Commission has also expanded services with regional offices in Mwanza, Arusha, Mbeya, and Tanga, in addition to its Dar es Salaam and Dodoma offices.
Citizens can access FCC services through toll-free lines, email, social media, and the e-Mrejesho platform for complaints or feedback.
FCC’s commitment to excellence has earned it ISO 9001:2015 certification, reflecting international standards in service delivery.
“Our strong regulatory framework ensures investors have confidence in Tanzania while promoting fair competition and consumer protection,” Ms. Ngasongwa said.
Minister Kapinga praised FCC’s efforts and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the Ministry and the Commission to strengthen Tanzania’s business environment and support inclusive economic growth.
