Tanzania grants pardon to youth charged with treason

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has pardoned all young people charged with treason for their involvement in protests during the October 29 general election.

The announcement was made today, November 14, during the inauguration of the 13th Parliament in Dodoma.

President Samia directed security and law enforcement agencies, including the Director of Public Prosecutions’ office, to review the cases and release those who had merely followed the crowd, returning them to their families.

“Watching the clips from the protests, it is clear that some youths joined out of curiosity or excitement and did not understand the seriousness of their actions. As a mother and guardian, I am instructing authorities to assess the level of offences and release those who acted without intent,” President Samia said.

She acknowledged that peer pressure and the thrill of protests can sometimes lead young people into criminal acts.

“Many of the youths arrested and charged with treason were unaware of the gravity of their actions,” she added.

The President reminded Tanzanian youth that the nation belongs to them and urged them to safeguard it.

“Never allow yourselves to be persuaded to harm your own country. Do not destroy the very foundation on which you live. Reject such actions with all your strength,” she said.

President Samia further called on young people to embrace unity, inclusivity, understanding, and self-correction.

“This country was built on peace and political stability. If previous generations had acted recklessly, Tanzania would not enjoy the progress and development it has today,” she noted.
