Tanzania Forms special commission to probe October 29 election violence

The Government of Tanzania has established a special commission to investigate the violence that occurred during the General Elections on October 29, 2025. 

The commission aims to identify the root causes of the unrest and promote dialogue that will restore harmony and safeguard national peace.

The announcement was made today, by President Samia Suluhu Hassan while officially opening the 13th Parliament for its first meeting of the fourth session, convened for the first time in Dodoma.

President Samia expressed appreciation to all citizens who registered and participated in the elections, underlining the importance of active civic engagement in strengthening Tanzania’s democracy.

The opening ceremony was attended by senior leaders, including former President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete; former Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango; former Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa; former National Assembly Speaker Anne Makinda; Chief Court Administrator Olesante Gabriel; President of Zanzibar Ali Hassan Mwinyi; Second Vice President of Zanzibar Hemed Suleiman Abdulla; and representatives from several foreign countries.

The government also extended condolences to families who lost loved ones, expressed concern for those injured, and reaffirmed support for all citizens affected by the election-related violence. 

President Samia called on Tanzanian youth to refrain from actions or influences that could threaten the country’s peace.

It is recalled that on October 29, incidents of violence disrupted the electoral process, leading to fatalities, injuries, and damage to property, highlighting the need for urgent measures to address the underlying causes and strengthen national unity.
