TANROADS begins urgent repairs on faulty Mikese weighbridge system

The Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) in Morogoro Region has begun restoring the Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) system at the Mikese weighbridge, responding to a government directive aimed at easing heavy congestion along the Morogoro highway.

The repairs follow instructions issued by Minister for Construction, Abdallah Ulega, during an inspection tour where he found long queues of trucks caused by technical faults in the automated weighing system.

He immediately ordered a team of experts to address the malfunction and restore normal operations.

Speaking on Monday, November 24, 2025, TANROADS Weighbridge Engineer Juma Kipande said the breakdown stemmed from a faulty sensor that prevented the system from capturing accurate axle-load data.

“This weighbridge was installed in 2015 as part of a ministry pilot project to reduce congestion at weighing stations. We have now reopened the system and commenced repairs to ensure services proceed smoothly,” Eng. Kipande said.

Minister Ulega’s surprise visit on November 23 uncovered significant flaws in the WIM system.

He directed TANROADS to expedite the repairs and took administrative action, including suspending negligent staff to allow investigations and disciplinary processes to proceed.

The government expects the restored WIM system to improve traffic flow, enhance enforcement of axle-load regulations, and support safer, more efficient transport along one of the country’s busiest highways.
