NEMC trains government institutions on environmental management tools

The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has launched a two-day training programme aimed at strengthening the capacity of ministries, public institutions and local government authorities in enforcing environmental laws and improving sustainable environmental management.

The training, held in Dodoma from November 27 to 28, 2025, is part of a national capacity-building project funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

The initiative supports the effective implementation of the Environmental Management Act of 2004.

According to NEMC, the programme is designed to enhance understanding of environmental management tools and improve the ability of officials to assess environmental impacts, design mitigation strategies, and apply the law more effectively in their daily operations.

Opening the session, NEMC’s Manager for Special Areas and Climate Change, Dr. Careen Kahangwa, urged participants to use the training to strengthen environmental governance in their institutions.

She said improved skills among officers would help the country respond better to emerging environmental challenges.

The training is delivered by NEMC experts, alongside facilitators from the Office of the Controller and Auditor General (CAG), the Vice President’s Office, and the private-sector organisation dubbed Taka ni Ajira.

Participants discussed common environmental challenges facing their ministries and councils, including waste management, regulatory compliance and environmental degradation. They also explored ways to improve monitoring, reporting and community awareness.

The programme aligns with the National Development Vision 2050, whose third pillar emphasises environmental protection and climate resilience.

NEMC says the knowledge gained will help strengthen enforcement of environmental laws and contribute to the long-term protection of the country’s natural resources for current and future generations.
