Tanzanian boxer Pius Mpenda delivered a spirited performance in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, forcing a draw against Mexico’s Julio Ruiz in an intense six-round international bout held at the ANB Arena.
Mpenda impressed thousands of boxing fans who filled the arena, showcasing discipline, patience and tactical awareness against the taller and more experienced Ruiz. The opening rounds saw Mpenda study his opponent carefully, as Ruiz used his reach advantage to land long-range punches.
As the fight progressed, Mpenda shifted strategy, choosing to fight from close range where he found greater success. He began targeting Ruiz’s exposed midsection with well-timed body shots, gradually disrupting the Mexican’s rhythm.
By the fifth round, the Tanzanian had gained full control. He landed a clean combination that caught Ruiz between the left eye and ear, forcing the Mexican onto the ropes. Encouraged by his corner, Mpenda maintained pressure with precise and powerful punches that kept Ruiz on the defensive.
After six hard-fought rounds, the judges scored the fight a draw — a result widely viewed as fair given Mpenda’s strong showing on foreign soil.
Mpenda is currently ranked third among 36 Tanzanian middleweight boxers, with a global ranking of 223 out of 1,934. He now holds a record of 17 fights, 11 wins, four losses and two draws.
Ruiz, ranked fourth in Mexico and 50th worldwide in the middleweight category, entered the fight with 13 wins from 14 bouts. His draw against Mpenda marks only the second non-win of his professional career.
Mpenda’s performance in Riyadh has been hailed as a proud moment for Tanzanian boxing, proving his ability to challenge top-ranked opponents on the international stage.
