Iringa and Dodoma set to enjoy reliable electricity

By The Respondents Reporter

More than TZS 10 billion has been invested to ensure reliable electricity supply for residents of Iringa and Dodoma regions, Deputy Minister of Energy, Salome Makamba, has confirmed.

On November 26, 2025, Makamba visited the Bwala hydropower project at Mtera Dam, located on the border between the two regions, to inspect recent upgrades to the facility.

She said the improved power-generating equipment is expected to operate efficiently through the next rainy season, providing a stable electricity supply to districts including Mpwapwa, Chamwino, and Isimani.

“Following these upgrades, we are confident that electricity will be available consistently, ensuring that Dodoma and Iringa residents enjoy reliable power,” she said.

Makamba thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for prioritizing citizens’ needs and ensuring challenges are addressed through tangible government interventions.

The Deputy Minister also urged communities living near water sources feeding Mtera Dam, particularly in the Ihefu valley, to protect the environment and safeguard these critical resources, noting that energy remains the backbone of Tanzania’s economy.

Deputy Executive Director for Electricity Distribution at TANESCO, Mr. Athanasius Nangali, confirmed that the plant is operating efficiently, maintaining its 80-megawatt capacity.

He encouraged residents to take advantage of the reliable electricity to expand economic activities, supported further by the newly constructed electricity reception and cooling station under the Rural Energy Agency (REA).
