The Nkasi District Commissioner, Peter Lijualikali, has commended Tanzanian fishers for their crucial role in driving economic growth, noting that the Government continues to improve fisheries infrastructure and provide financial support, including loans for modern boats, fish cages, and essential equipment to enhance production.

Speaking during the World Fisheries Day celebrations on November 21, 2025, in Kalungu Village, Nkasi District, Rukwa Region, Commissioner Lijualikali said the event reflects President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision to ensure the fisheries sector contributes significantly to national development while increasing incomes for small-scale fishers and aquaculture farmers.

“The President continues to prioritise productive sectors, including fisheries, to promote national growth and livelihoods,” he said.

Lijualikali highlighted that fisheries remain a key pillar of Tanzania’s economy, providing employment, ensuring food and nutrition security, and generating income for families and the nation.

He also thanked the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for supporting the celebrations.

Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Baraka Sekadende, Acting Assistant Director of Fisheries, said the aim of the event is to unite stakeholders, address their concerns, exchange experiences, and educate fishers about laws, regulations, guidelines, and ongoing sector plans.

He encouraged fishers to work together to ensure sustainable and productive fishing practices.

From TNC, John Kimaro urged fishers to maintain the cleanliness of Lake Tanganyika’s shores to prevent pollution, protect aquatic life, and safeguard human health.

He stressed that regular clean-ups are essential to preserve the lake for current and future generations.

The Councillor-elect for Mkinga, Nkasi, Mohamed Zaidi, expressed gratitude to the Sixth-Phase Government and the Ministry for investing in fisheries infrastructure, which has strengthened productivity and improved livelihoods.

He added that fishers in Mkinga now need dedicated fish markets, modern boats, aquaculture cages, and other gear to boost production further.
