Minister of Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, has called on officials from the Electricity and Renewable Energy Department and the Petroleum Department to complete key national energy priorities within 100 days.
The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Dodoma, was also attended by Deputy Minister Salome Makamba.
Speaking during the session, Ndejembi emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to delivering on President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision.
“My expectation is that within 100 days, the Ministry should have completed these priorities, including all ongoing projects, in line with the President’s goals,” he said.
Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mr. Innocent Luoga, reported that Tanzania’s electricity supply has improved significantly with the completion of the Kinyerezi I power plant (335 MW) and the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (2,115 MW). This has brought the country’s total electricity generation capacity to 4,383.74 MW.
According to Mr. Luoga, current electricity demand averages 2,450.73 MW, with peak demand on the national grid reaching 2,044.53 MW as of November 17, 2025, and 406.2 MW in off-grid areas.
A total of 5,689,557 customers are now connected to electricity, covering 85.5 percent of Tanzanians 99.8 percent in urban areas and 78.1 percent in rural areas.
Overall electricity connectivity stands at 52.1 percent, with 76.5 percent of urban and 37.1 percent of rural residents connected. All 12,318 villages in mainland Tanzania now have access to electricity, while 60 percent of sub-villages (38,645 out of 64,359) are connected, with the remaining expected to be electrified by 2030.
On petroleum, Commissioner Godluck Shirima said 96 deep wells have been drilled nationwide, including 59 onshore and 37 offshore.
He also highlighted the Natural Gas Utilisation Master Plan (NGUMP) 2016–2045, which provides a long-term strategy for sustainable gas use in electricity generation, industrial development, and domestic consumption.
Ndejembi praised both departments for their performance but stressed the importance of timely project completion to support the Sixth Phase Government’s development agenda and long-term national goals.
The session was also attended by Ministry Secretary General Mr. Felchesmi Mramba and senior officials from both departments.
