The construction of the 390-metre Jangwani Bridge, a major infrastructure project aimed at easing transport flow and reducing flooding in Dar es Salaam, has reached 13 per cent completion, officials said.

The bridge, which forms part of the government’s wider strategy to tackle persistent flooding in the city’s Msimbazi Valley, is expected to improve mobility for motorists, pedestrians, and transport operators who rely on the corridor daily.

Speaking during an inspection of the ongoing works on Tuesday, November 25, Minister for Works Abdallah Ulega said the bridge is a key long-term solution to the recurring floods that have historically disrupted social and economic activities in the city.

“The Jangwani Bridge will enhance the city’s resilience to seasonal floods and significantly reduce travel delays,” Mr Ulega said.

The minister was accompanied by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila and the Ministry of Works Permanent Secretary, Eng. Aisha Amour.

The project, which includes 710 metres of access roads, is being executed by China Communications Construction Company with technical consultancy support from Leporogo Specialist Engineers, Afrisa Consulting, and Dong Myeong Engineering Consultants and Architecture.

The TZS97.1 billion project is funded through a World Bank loan under the Msimbazi Basin Development Project, a multi-phase initiative focused on rehabilitating the valley, reducing disaster risks, and improving infrastructure across the area.

Construction is scheduled to be completed within 24 months, marking a significant step towards modernizing Dar es Salaam’s transport network and enhancing urban resilience.
