TMA issues advisory on heavy rains and large waves along coastline

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall and large ocean waves expected to affect parts of the country, particularly along the Indian Ocean coast and nearby islands, between October 27 and 28, 2025.

According to TMA’s five-day severe weather impact-based forecast released on Monday, moderate to heavy rains are expected in Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Pwani (including Mafia Island), and Morogoro regions, as well as Unguja and Pemba Isles.

The forecast categorizes the likelihood and impact of the rains as medium, meaning localized flooding may occur in some areas.

The authority also cautioned against large waves reaching up to two metres, which may affect the entire coastline from Tanga to Mtwara, including Lindi and the Mafia Islands.

These conditions could disrupt economic and marine activities such as fishing, transport, and docking operations.

“Localized floods over a few areas and disruption of some economic and marine activities are expected,” TMA stated in the advisory, urging residents and maritime operators to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

The forecast further indicates that the heavy rainfall is likely to continue through Tuesday, October 28, before subsiding in the following days.

No warnings have been issued for the period between October 29 and 31, suggesting weather conditions will stabilize midweek.

TMA has advised the public, especially those in low-lying and coastal areas, to stay informed through official updates and to cooperate with local authorities in case of emergency instructions.
