Government calls for impactful research to address economic challenges

The government has emphasized the importance of research and innovation in driving Tanzania’s economic transformation, urging members of newly formed research committees to ensure that their work produces practical and evidence-based recommendations to support policy and development reforms.

Speaking in Dodoma during the official inauguration of the Research and Innovation Committee, Advisory Committee, and Technical Committee, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Jenifa Christian Omolo, said the committees must execute their responsibilities with professionalism, transparency, and creativity.

She represented the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Natu El-Maamry Mwamba, at the event held at the Kambarage Hall, Treasury Square.

Omolo said the Ministry of Finance recognizes research and innovation as the engines of sustainable development and the foundation of policy, economic, and institutional transformation.

“The establishment of the Advisory and Technical Committees forms part of implementing the 2025 Ministry of Finance Research and Innovation Guidelines, which provide a structured framework for coordinating research and innovation activities within the Ministry,” she explained.

Through effective research, Omolo said, the Ministry will be able to identify challenges, uncover new opportunities, and develop sustainable solutions in areas such as fiscal policy, budgeting, revenue collection, public expenditure, and overall economic management.

“The Ministry can leverage research and innovation to improve efficiency, inform decision-making, and promote evidence-based policy reforms that respond to the country’s economic realities,” she added.

Outlining the roles of the committees, Omolo noted that the Advisory Committee will be responsible for reviewing research ideas, evaluating reports, recommending incentives for innovators, and ensuring the quality of implementation. “Your appointment reflects your professional experience, integrity, and competence in your respective institutions,” she told members.

The Technical Committee, she said, will evaluate research and innovation proposals, ensure ethical and quality standards are met, and submit progress reports to the Advisory Committee for further action.

On behalf of committee members, Acting Director of the Planning Department in the Ministry of Finance, Alex Mwakisu, pledged close collaboration and commitment to deliver timely and impactful research that will contribute meaningfully to the government’s goals and the nation’s overall development.

The Technical Committee on Research and Innovation comprises Dr. Remidius D. Ruhinduka, Ernest K. Laiton, Dr. Iddy Zuberi Kayumba, Innocent Anthony, Dr. Lusekelo Mwandondwa, Catherine Karumuna, Nacky Sinda, Dr. Lusajo Mwankemwa, and Deogratius Protas Massawe.

Members of the Advisory Committee include Moses W. Dulle, Dr. Remidius D. Ruhinduka, William M. Mhoja, Veronica M. Kishala, Fundi M. Makama, Kishiwa Y. Masabo, Ernest K. Laiton, Emma Komba, Dionisia P. Mjema, Massaga J. Fimbo, Dr. Deogratius P. Macha, and Seif Kuchengo.

Omolo emphasized that the government expects the committees to strengthen the link between research, policy formulation, and implementation — ensuring that findings not only remain in reports but translate into tangible solutions that boost Tanzania’s economic resilience.
