The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has recognized the crucial role journalists play in keeping Tanzanians informed about weather changes, presenting awards to eight reporters who excelled in weather reporting this year.
TMA Board Chairman, Judge Mshibe Ali Bakari, handed the awards today, praising the journalists for their dedication to providing accurate and timely information that protects lives and supports national development.
“These awards are not just a recognition they are a call to continue reporting responsibly. When floods or other weather disasters strike, it affects all of us, not only TMA. Your work saves lives and empowers communities,” Judge Bakari said during the ceremony in Dar es Salaam.
He urged awardees to maintain high standards in weather reporting, stressing that accurate information helps Tanzanians prepare for emergencies and make informed decisions in their daily lives.
“These awards motivate journalists to keep producing quality weather stories. They also strengthen public understanding of weather forecasts and how this information can be used to safeguard lives and property,” he added.
Acting Director General of TMA, Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, said the Authority is committed to building strong partnerships with media professionals.
He highlighted ongoing initiatives such as regular training sessions, particularly during seasonal rainfall forecasts, to ensure journalists deliver accurate and timely information to the public.
The awards were presented during a workshop focused on rainfall predictions for regions that receive seasonal rains once a year, covering November 2025 to April 2026.
Television awardees included Penina Malundo, Lisungu Kambona, Jerome Risasi, and Mariam Shabani.
Zanzibar-based journalist Amour Khamis Ali and online reporters Juma Issihaka, Zaitun Mkwama, and James Salvatory were also recognized for their outstanding contributions.
By celebrating these journalists, TMA reinforces the importance of reliable weather reporting, highlighting its role in protecting Tanzanian communities and promoting a safer, well-informed society.
