Shigala residents urged to heighten vigilance as Hyena attacks rise

Residents of Shigala Village in Busega District, Simiyu Region, have been urged to exercise caution following an increase in hyena sightings near residential areas, which has sparked fear among community members.

The advisory was issued on October 6, 2025, by Lusato Masinde, a Conservation Officer with the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), during a public meeting aimed at raising awareness about wildlife conservation and reducing conflicts with dangerous animals.

The meeting brought together officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, TAWA, and local wildlife officers.

“Residents must take preventive measures. These wild animals inhabit areas near our homes, where dense bushes and caves provide them cover,” Masinde warned, stressing that children are particularly vulnerable to attacks during evenings and nights.

Jesca Mathias, Busega District Natural Resources Officer, said the government continues to support communities affected by wildlife through compensation schemes.

“Residents should report injuries, deaths, or property damage caused by wild animals immediately. Compensation forms will be submitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to ensure timely relief,” Mathias said.

Meanwhile, Chief Wildlife Officer Nassoro Wawa highlighted the government’s new digital reporting system, which allows frontline officers in wildlife, agriculture, and livestock to submit real-time information from the field.

“This system accelerates the collection of data and expedites compensation for affected residents,” Wawa explained.

The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to promoting coexistence between communities and wildlife while enhancing safety and awareness in areas prone to human-wildlife conflicts.
