Ruvuma Regional Commissioner Brigadier General Ahmed Abbas Ahmed has underscored the importance of valuing and safeguarding the welfare of older persons, describing them as a national heritage and a pillar of Tanzania’s stability.

Addressing participants at the climax of the International Day of Older Persons in Songea District on October 1, 2025, Brig. Gen. Abbas said elders remain the foundation of peace, unity, and continuity of values in society.

He called on Tanzanians to respect their rights and well-being as part of building a sustainable future.

“The elderly are the bedrock of peace and stability in our country. We must honor them not only with words but through concrete actions that guarantee their dignity and access to services,” Brig. Gen. Abbas said.

He further encouraged older persons to actively participate in the forthcoming general election, stressing that their involvement is critical in electing leaders who will protect their rights and create an enabling environment under existing policies and laws.

“I commend the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups for organizing this year’s commemorations in Ruvuma, in collaboration with stakeholders,” he added.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Advocate Amon Mpanju, said elders play a central role as guardians, advisors, and custodians of positive cultural values.

He urged families and communities to embrace the responsibility of caring for them.

“Older persons are the moral compass of our society. They deserve our respect, attention, and protection so that they can continue shaping future generations,” Adv. Mpanju said.

He also called on young people to build a culture of visiting their elders, not only to provide support but also to learn morals and cultural heritage, which he described as a foundation for a society that values its traditions.

For his part, the Chairperson of the National Advisory Council of Elders, Lameck Sendo, affirmed that older persons are ready to exercise their constitutional right to vote in the general election, so as to choose leaders who will safeguard their rights and ensure their access to social services.

This year’s commemorations were held under the theme “Older Persons: Let Us Participate in the General Election for the Well-being of Our Society,” highlighting the need to encourage inclusivity in the democratic process and promote the protection of older citizens as part of national development.
