Roads boost economy in Ruvuma

The Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) in Ruvuma is making a visible impact on the region’s economy, agriculture, and environmental management, thanks to significant government investment in road infrastructure.

Silvester Chinengo, TARURA’s Regional Manager in Ruvuma, said that for the 2025/2026 fiscal year, the region is implementing development projects with a budget of TZS 22 billion, a notable increase from the previous TZS 7 billion.

“Currently, TARURA Ruvuma manages a road network spanning 7,147 kilometres, including 133.69 km of tarmac, 1,651.8 km of gravel, and 5,360.6 km of earth roads. Around 70 percent of these roads are passable all year round, bringing significant benefits to farmers and traders,” he said.

Chinengo highlighted that improved roads have transformed farming in the region. Crops such as maize and coffee now reach markets on time, reducing losses and increasing farmers’ incomes.

The agency has also procured 43 contracts worth TZS 12.1 billion, which are in the final stages of signing.

In the past year alone, more than three kilometres of tarmac roads have been constructed, and streetlights installed to improve safety and the urban environment at night.

“Every road now comes with streetlights, which enhance security and promote economic activity, especially after dark,” Chinengo said.

He also urged residents to protect roads by avoiding dumping waste into drainage channels and participating in their maintenance.

“The government has invested heavily, and it is our duty to ensure these roads last by preventing deliberate damage,” he added.

Residents in Makambi have welcomed the improvements. Eva Ndomba said that previously, roads were overgrown, dusty, and difficult even for motorcycles to navigate.

“We thank the government for constructing tarmac roads. Travel is easier, and streetlights now allow us to carry out business even at night,” she said.

Ally Musa, another local resident, said the new roads have made a huge difference, particularly during the rainy season.

“Before, we struggled on muddy tracks, but now we travel with ease. The streetlights have enabled young people to continue their activities even after dark,” he said.

The expansion and improvement of Ruvuma’s road network reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity, stimulating local trade, and improving the quality of life for residents.

With better roads, the region is on track for accelerated economic growth and sustainable development.
