Songea District Commissioner, Kapenjama Ndile, has called on communities to protect and empower elders, describing them as the nation’s treasure and key contributors to societal development.
Speaking on behalf of Ruvuma Regional Commissioner Brigadier General Ahmed Abbas Ahmed during a pre-commemoration conference for the International Day of Older Persons on Tuesday, Ndile emphasized that elders hold wisdom and experience essential for guiding communities.
“Our elders are more than a generation to be respected they are a source of guidance, a wealth of experience, and a foundation for community development. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure their well-being,” he said.
Tanzania joins other countries worldwide in observing this day to raise awareness about the rights and welfare of older persons and to encourage their active participation in social, economic, and political life.
Lameck Sendo, Chairman of the National Council of Elders, urged young people to support elders by providing shelter, food, and clothing.
He warned that neglecting elders is a form of social injustice and an attack on the values that hold families and communities together.
This year’s celebrations carry the theme: “Elders Participate in Elections for the Welfare of Our Society”, encouraging older citizens to exercise their civic rights and elect leaders who will champion their welfare and development.
The main event is scheduled for October 1, 2025, at Songea Club Hall, where over 1,000 participants, including elders, local leaders, and community representatives, are expected to attend.
