Mining Commission Laboratory boosts Tanzania’s mining sector

By Our Reporter, Dar es Salaam

Since its establishment in 2020, the Mining Commission Laboratory in Dar es Salaam has been transforming Tanzania’s mining sector, delivering faster services, improving transparency, and helping the country earn more revenue from mineral exports.

Engineer Mwarabu Mvunilwa, Acting Manager for Minerals Audit and Laboratory Services at the Mining Commission, said on October 23, 2025, that the laboratory has become a trusted hub for mineral testing, certification, and advisory services, benefiting both large investors and local mineral dealers.

“The laboratory has changed how the mining sector operates. Dealers now trade minerals with confidence because they can rely on our internationally accredited testing services. This not only boosts government revenue but also strengthens investor confidence in Tanzania,” said Eng. Mvunilwa during a visit to the laboratory offices in Msasani, Dar es Salaam, ahead of a feature programme by Clouds Media Group.

She noted that the laboratory’s location near the Port of Dar es Salaam makes testing and verification easier for exporters, allowing faster clearance of shipments and reducing delays in trade.

“Our proximity to the port has simplified operations for exporters, and many investors now come to us for scientific testing before making investment decisions,” she explained.

The laboratory has also gained recognition across the region for its professionalism, reliability, and advanced equipment, which can analyze all types of minerals with speed and precision.

Neighboring countries are now sending delegations to learn from Tanzania’s experience, putting the country at the forefront of mineral testing and certification in East Africa.

Looking ahead, the Mining Commission plans to expand its services by setting up satellite testing units in major mining regions.

This will bring laboratory services closer to artisanal and small-scale miners, making high-quality mineral testing more accessible and affordable for all stakeholders.

Mineral dealer Salustian Raymond praised the laboratory for improving business operations.

“The services here are fast, accurate, and affordable. We can operate confidently knowing that our minerals meet international standards. Engineer Mvunilwa and her team have shown great leadership,” he said.

By ensuring quality assurance, transparency, and competitiveness, the Mining Commission Laboratory continues to play a strategic role in Tanzania’s growing mining industry, benefiting both citizens and investors alike.
