Leadership and unity drive Mbeya DC to Uhuru Torch victory

Strong leadership and unity among officials have been credited for steering Mbeya District Council to victory in this year’s Uhuru Torch Race across the Southern Highlands.

The council’s Executive Director, Erica Yegella, said the achievement reflects how effective coordination between regional and district authorities can translate into tangible success in public service delivery.

Mbeya District Council was declared the overall winner among councils in the Southern Highlands and received its trophy from Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango during the national Uhuru Torch closing ceremony held at the Sokoine Memorial Stadium in Mbeya.

The event coincided with Youth Week celebrations and the 26th commemoration of the passing of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the Father of the Nation.

Yegella praised the leadership of Mbeya Regional Commissioner Benno Malisa and District Commissioner Solomon Itunda, saying their guidance and teamwork among council staff were key to the milestone.

“Our victory is the result of collective commitment, discipline, and patriotism. We have created an environment where leaders and staff work as one team to serve our people effectively,” she said.

She added that the award is not only a recognition of the council’s success but also a reminder that effective governance depends on partnership, accountability, and community involvement.

“We are motivated to continue serving with integrity and innovation, ensuring that our development efforts directly benefit citizens,” she noted.

The Uhuru Torch Race, launched in 1964 by Mwalimu Nyerere, remains a national emblem of unity and progress.

Each year, it highlights community projects that demonstrate transparency, accountability, and service to the people values that Mbeya District Council has now been recognized for embodying.

Yegella said the recognition will inspire her team to push further in delivering quality services, promoting local economic growth, and maintaining the spirit of cooperation that defines Mbeya’s leadership model.
