INEC issues clear guidelines ahead of 2025 general election

By The Respondents Reporter

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released official policy guidelines to ensure a smooth and transparent voting process in the 2025 General Election, scheduled for October 29.

The directives are based on the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections Act No. 1 of 2024 and the Independent National Electoral Commission Act No. 2 of 2024.

The guidelines clarify who can vote and the types of identification voters must present at polling stations. Voters without a photograph in the Permanent Voter Register but holding a valid voter card with personal details will be allowed to vote.

Similarly, voters whose card number differs from the register, but whose other details including name and photograph match, will also be permitted to cast their vote.

Voters who have lost or damaged their voter cards may vote using a National ID (NIDA), driver’s license, or passport, provided the names on the ID match the Permanent Voter Register exactly.

However, voters whose details do not appear in the register, even if they hold a voter card, will not be allowed to vote.

INEC also addressed voters from ten dissolved wards whose cards still carry information from their former polling areas.

These voters will be allowed to vote at their new polling stations to ensure they exercise their right without disruption.

The Commission emphasized that the guidelines are designed to protect the voting rights of all Tanzanians and to guarantee a smooth election process.

Citizens are urged to verify their voter information and come prepared to vote on October 29, 2025.
