Health Secretary urges Tanzanians to prioritize wellness and innovation

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Seif Shekalaghe, has called on Tanzanians to take charge of their health by exercising regularly, eating balanced meals, and ensuring adequate rest, even while managing busy work schedules.

Dr. Shekalaghe made the appeal, in Dar es Salaam during the launch of “From Muscle to Brain”, a book by Dr. Catherine Kahabuka that promotes holistic wellbeing and healthy lifestyles.

“Maintaining health is crucial. Public servants and all Tanzanians must balance work, family, and personal wellness to safeguard both mental and physical wellbeing,” Dr. Shekalaghe said.

He urged health professionals to actively use their knowledge to educate communities, particularly on non-communicable diseases, which remain a growing challenge in the country. He stressed that sharing expertise with the public is essential for societal wellbeing.

Dr. Shekalaghe also encouraged doctors and nurses to explore private sector opportunities, such as opening clinics, hospitals, and laboratories, rather than relying solely on government employment.

“The government has created a supportive environment for health professionals to innovate and invest, which also generates employment for young people,” he noted.

Dr. Catherine Kahabuka said her book aims to inspire both public and private sector workers to leverage their skills and creativity to create opportunities beyond traditional employment, fostering innovation and self-reliance.

Experts say initiatives like this are vital in promoting a culture of self-care, stress management, and entrepreneurship, ensuring Tanzanians remain healthy while contributing to the country’s development.
