Government calls for stronger child safety measures in schools

The government has reiterated its call for schools and communities to strengthen child safety measures, emphasizing that the protection and well-being of children must remain a top priority in all learning environments.

Speaking during a training session on the Safe Schools Program, Chief Trainer from Mpwapwa Teachers College, Juma Kizija, said child safety in schools requires collective responsibility and coordinated efforts among teachers, parents, and community leaders.

He urged headteachers to develop clear plans to improve school infrastructure and ensure that classrooms, toilets, pathways, and playgrounds are safe, child-friendly, and uphold the dignity of learners.

Kizija stressed that school committees must work closely with parents and local communities to identify and address safety challenges early.

“A school is not just a building; it is a place of care, protection, and character development. Every step forward in education must consider the child’s safety and rights,” he said.

He further called on school heads to establish strong reporting systems for cases of violence, abuse, or any signs of danger affecting students, and to educate children on how to protect themselves both at school and on their way home.

Kizija also reminded parents that child upbringing should not be left to teachers alone, saying that successful education and character development depend on active parental participation in school meetings, decision-making, and activities.

“Quality education cannot be achieved in unsafe environments,” he said. “To build a generation that is disciplined, knowledgeable, and hopeful about the future, our schools must be places that value dignity, safety, and the rights of every child.”

The Safe Schools Program, implemented through joint efforts of teachers, parents, and community leaders, aims to create secure and supportive learning spaces across the country laying a strong foundation for Tanzania’s educational and social development.
