Tanzania’s energy sector is witnessing a surge of youth-driven innovation, with women stepping forward to make a mark.

The government, in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has awarded TZS 250 million to ten outstanding innovators in the Energy Efficiency and Innovation Competition.

The grants were handed over in Dar es Salaam by Eng. Innocent Luoga, Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, representing the Ministry of Energy’s Permanent Secretary, Eng. Felchesmi Mramba.

The competition recognized innovators in three critical areas: low-electricity-consuming devices, energy-efficient building infrastructure, and monitoring tools that track electricity usage.

Although hundreds of innovators participated, ten emerged as winners for their remarkable contributions to advancing energy efficiency in the country.

Eng. Luoga said the initiative is part of a broader effort to nurture youth-led innovations that promote sustainable energy use.

“Our goal is to create a culture of energy efficiency by supporting young innovators who develop technologies that contribute to national energy sustainability,” he explained.

Women innovators were particularly praised for their active participation. John Rutere, UNDP Resident Representative, noted: “The strong representation of women among the winners highlights the growing role of female innovators in shaping Tanzania’s energy sector and national development.”

The Ministry of Energy also announced plans to install energy-efficient systems in government buildings at Mtumba Government City.

The initiative aims to showcase environmentally friendly technologies in public institutions while encouraging similar practices across other government facilities.

Eng. Luoga added that the government will continue mentoring and supporting young innovators in collaboration with development partners, including the World Bank and African Development Bank (AfDB).

“Empowering youth, especially women, ensures that innovative, sustainable energy solutions continue to emerge across Tanzania,” he said.

The event underscores how Tanzania’s youth, particularly women, are leading the charge in driving innovation, promoting sustainability, and shaping a greener future for the nation.
