Vodacom Tanzania has launched an ambitious modernization programme worth more than $100 million as the company marks 25 years of operations in the country.

The investment, among the largest in the telecom’s history, is designed to transform network infrastructure, expand digital inclusion, and support Tanzania’s long-term growth ambitions.

The initiative will see thousands of network sites upgraded across the country and major enhancements to the company’s IT systems, including the M-Pesa platform.

Vodacom says customers will benefit from faster internet speeds, improved call quality, more stable mobile money services, and stronger cybersecurity safeguards.

“Our journey to Vision 2030 has officially begun,” said Vodacom Tanzania Managing Director Philip Besiimire.

“With this investment, we are laying the foundation for the next five years and beyond empowering people with better access, protecting the planet through greener technologies, and maintaining the trust of our customers, partners, and investors. So far, more than 1,000 sites have already been upgraded in the Lake Zone, Southern Highlands, and parts of Central Tanzania.”he added

The company’s Vision 2030 strategy revolves around three pillars: people, planet, and trust. Vodacom says the programme aligns with Tanzania’s digital transformation agenda and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

In line with its ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2035, Vodacom plans to cut energy use by up to 30 percent through the deployment of energy-efficient technologies.

The firm also aims to extend high-quality digital services to underserved rural areas, bridging gaps in access while advancing its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments.

According to Network Director Andrew Lupembe, the upgrades will significantly boost 4G coverage and introduce greener solutions.

“We are going greener with Huawei’s industry-leading ‘zero-bit-zero watt’ technology, which reduces power consumption while improving network efficiency. At the same time, multi-band radio technology will allow us to optimize tower space and deliver broader coverage,” he said.

As Tanzania’s digital economy accelerates, Vodacom says the investment underscores its role as a key driver of innovation, financial inclusion, and connectivity.

The company pledged to continue building infrastructure that empowers individuals and businesses to fully participate in the digital future.
