Residents of Ukara Island in Ukerewe District, Mwanza Region, are celebrating improvements to local roads, saying the repairs have made daily travel easier and safer.
The government, through the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), has started upgrading several key roads that were previously difficult to navigate.
During a visit by Engineer Rogatus Mativila, Deputy Parmanent Secretary of the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), residents noted that the newly repaired gravel roads now allow vehicles and pedestrians to move without obstacles, improving access to markets, schools, and health facilities.
Many residents also called on TARURA to upgrade the road from the bridge to Bwisya Hospital to bitumen standard, a move they say would significantly improve emergency access and healthcare delivery on the island.
The renewed attention comes after national leaders promised during past visits to pave roads linking Nyamanga-Bwisya, Katende-Bugaramila, and Bwisya-Kome, totaling 2 kilometers.
Feasibility and design studies for these roads have already been completed, paving the way for future development.
For the people of Ukara, the ongoing repairs are more than construction work they represent safer travel, better healthcare access, and a step toward modern infrastructure on the island.
