The Tulia Trust Cup has grown into more than a football tournament in Mbeya, with young players, coaches and communities crediting it for creating opportunities, building confidence and injecting economic benefits into the region.

This year’s edition, which brought together 35 teams, ended with Itezi United crowned champions after a narrow 1–0 win over Chipukizi FC.

The winners pocketed TZS 10 million, while runners-up Chipukizi FC received TZS 5 million and third-placed Airport FC earned TZS 3 million.

Speaking at the finals, Speaker of Parliament and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr Tulia Ackson, reaffirmed her commitment to sponsoring the competition for the next three years.

She said sports should be seen not only as entertainment but also as a career that can help transform lives.

“We want young people to see football as employment. The efforts they put into the game should translate into income that supports their future,” she said.

Apart from cash prizes, awards were handed to the best player, top scorer, best goalkeeper, most disciplined team, best referee and the best cheering squad, adding value to individual performance and team spirit.

For many participants, the tournament represents a chance to showcase their talent and gain exposure. Faraja Ntima, coach of Itezi United, said his team’s determination was rewarded after a difficult match.

“It was tough, but we never gave up. Winning the trophy and TZS 10 million is a huge achievement that gives us motivation to aim higher,” he said.

Local sponsors have also highlighted the wider impact. Raphael Ndelwa noted that channeling resources into football, education and sports infrastructure has reduced costs in other areas, such as political campaigns, while strengthening community development.

Beyond the pitch, the Tulia Trust Cup has become a source of pride and inspiration in Mbeya. Crowds turn out in large numbers to cheer their teams, generating income for vendors and small businesses around the venues. The event has also encouraged discipline, teamwork and ambition among the youth.

For many in Mbeya, the tournament is not just about winning a trophy, but about opening doors to new opportunities.
