Temeke unveils TZS70 billion plan to boost schools and health services

Temeke Municipal Council has unveiled a TZS70 billion development plan to expand education and health facilities, a move that officials say will ease pressure on social services in Dar es Salaam’s fast-growing districts.

The projects, to be implemented during the 2025/26 and 2026/27 financial years, will include three new schools in Makangarawe, Mwmbebamia, and Kibondemaji; two hospitals in Vigoa and Malela; and the construction of the Mbagala bus terminal. All the buildings will be multi-storey to address land shortages in the city.

Temeke District Commissioner, Sixtus Mapunda, said the projects are financed through local revenues and are designed to meet the growing demand for quality services.

“By adopting vertical construction, we are making efficient use of limited space while ensuring residents gain access to essential services,” he explained.

During a special meeting in Temeke where the plans were presented, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, commended the council for its ambitious vision.

He urged leaders across the region to implement projects that not only respond to present challenges but also leave a lasting legacy.

Mr. Chalamila highlighted traffic congestion as one of the city’s most pressing challenges, calling for innovative solutions that could stand as a landmark achievement for future generations.

He also directed that new school buildings be equipped with smart classrooms to align with digital transformation, while every municipal council should form football teams and establish sports academies.

The unveiling of the TSh70 billion plan reflects a broader push in Dar es Salaam to strengthen social infrastructure and improve urban planning in line with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s development priorities.
